Creating a blog takes a lot of time and effort. We know it can be discouraging when you devote time to creating content, only to have three people actually click onto your page to read it. As a teacher, you already have a busy schedule, and blogging can start to feel like an extracurricular activity! This is why we want to help, with some insight on how to boost blog views:
Let’s be real – a dull headline will never give you thousands of page views. Make it short, sharp and seductive (the three S’s). Tell users exactly what the blog is about, but don’t make it too long. We recommend 8 – 12 words. And make sure you get creative! Take a look at other headlines for inspiration if you are struggling. Use powerful phrases like “10 Ways to..” or “How to..” – yes, just like the title of this blog post. You could also ask a question, or create a sense of urgency. For example: “Tired All the Time? Renew Your Energy with 5 Simple Steps”. The main aim of your headline is to try and make people want to read more. It is your first line of communication.
Before you start writing anything, think about your audience. Who are they, what are they interested in, what do they need? If you don’t keep your audience in mind, and relate back to them throughout your blog posts, you will never create an established audience, or good content for that matter. Making this clear to yourself will help you stay relevant and guide your content from start to finish. Always ask yourself this: who am I speaking to and why?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It allows search engines to crawl your site and make your blog visible to relevant readers. SEO includes things like: labeling images correctly, giving blog posts tags and categories, placing keywords throughout your article. Give your content immortal life by creating Evergreen Content – content that is always relevant. What we mean by this, is when you write content containing specific dates or time frames, for example, “Last week, BC instigated rule X and Y which will affect teachers because..”, your blog post will only be relevant for a few months, or maybe one year if you are lucky. Be clever with your content and word it in a way that it can be re-used for years to come.
Share your blogs on social media. Share your blog with family and friends. Comment on other people’s blogs. Link to other blogs in your content. All these online socializing tips will help draw more people to your blog and help establish your name. Remember blogging is universal – sharing is also a great way to connect to communities worldwide and build your network.
Make sure you blog regularly. Users tend to unfollow inactive blogs so try to create good blogging habits from the start. On days you are unable to update your blog, try not to leave it blank – reuse content or images that relate to your topic. For example, a teacher blogging about ed-tech could post an inspirational ed-tech quote or YouTube video (always be careful of copyright when doing this). Remember blogging is a big commitment, which is why 90% of bloggers fail. The key is to start with daily writing targets or time, for example, 20 minutes per day dedicated to your blog in order to help build an audience.
You’ve heard it before and now more than ever, it’s an absolute must – make your blogs mobile friendly! Most visits to your site will be on a mobile or tablet device, so make sure your blog can be viewed in all browsers. If users have to scroll sideways to read content or the page takes too long to download, they will go somewhere else to find the information they were looking for.

Blogging isn’t an overnight triumph. Building an audience, building trust, building your name – it all takes time. Be patient with your success and allow your network to create itself organically through great content.
